Leachate Sampling
Leachate samples are collected by submerging laboratory-supplied sample containers or a
decontaminated sampling dipper into the leachate pond at the designated sampling station. At
the time of sampling, a YSI 3560 Water Quality Meter® (or equivalent) was used to measure field
parameters (EC and pH) and recorded on a Well Data Sheet.
Lysimeter Sampling
Soil-pore liquid sampling was conducted using the following sampling procedures:
• Soil-pore liquid was drawn into the lysimeter by applying a vacuum of a minimum of 25 inches
of mercury to the vacuum/pressure tubing approximately 72 hours prior to sampling. After
the vacuum had been applied to the vacuum line, it was clamped shut with a ring clamp and
disconnected from the pump. During the vacuum application procedure, the sample collection
tube remained shut.
• The period of time for sample collection depends on the soil in which the lysimeter is
installed and the available moisture. To collect the liquid sample, the vacuum/pressure line
was attached to a hand pump and the end of the sample collection tube was placed in the
sample collection vessel. The hand pump was gently pumped, creating just enough pressure
to push any sample out of the lysimeter that might have collected into the sample bottle.

Sample Collection and Handling
• Each sample was collected in approved laboratory supplied sample containers filled completely
and immediately capped, labeled, and placed in a cooler with ice.
• Samples were collected in order of volatility. VOCs first, followed by SVOCs, herbicides, pesticides,
PCBs, general chemistry, and metals.
• Samples for VOC analysis were filled by pouring the sample down the sides of the container to minimize
aeration and capped with no airspace.
• Collected samples, accompanied by a trip blank, were placed immediately in an ice-filled cooler for
transport to the state-certified testing laboratory. Samples were kept chilled (at about 4°C) until
delivery.
• A completed Chain-of-Custody form, detailing the sample I.D., date and time collected,
analyses requested, and other project information, accompanied each sample to the laboratory.
The Chain-of-Custody forms were signed and dated by all personnel retaining custody of the
samples (Appendix C).
Field Equipment and Calibration
Proper maintenance, calibration, and operation of each field instrument are the responsibility of
the field personnel and the instrument technicians assigned to the project. All instruments and
equipment used during the program will be maintained, calibrated, and operated according to
the manufacturers' guidelines and recommendations.
