TOEROEK SOP No.017,REv.2
ASSociATE5,INC RECORDING OF NOTES IN FIELD LOGBOOK
PAGE 6
• Name(s) of sampler(s).
• Collection time.
• Designation of sample as a grab or composite sample.
• Type of sample (water, sediment, soil gas, etc.) and any quality assurance/quality
control (QA/QC) information (e.g., a field duplicate, matrix spike/matrix spike
duplicate (MS/MSD), rinsate, ambient blank).
• On-site measurement data (pH,temperature, specific conductivity).
• Field observations (odors, colors, weather, etc.).
• Preliminary sample description.
• Type of preservative used.
• Instrument readings.
Record all sampling information immediately on the chain-of-custody and sample labels. If
pre-printed field data forms are available (forms such as the micropurge field data collection
form),data maybe entered on these pre-printed forms in addition to the logbook.Remember
that the chain-of-custody that remains with the samples is the primary custody record for
the samples; remember that the logbook is the primary record of activities; pre-printed field
data collection forms are only a convenience as a checklist and for presentation in reports.
If collecting split samples or recording duplicate data with other parties, in order to address data
validation for recording duplicate data in the logbook or field sheet, it must be ensured that
transcription errors have not occurred as data are copied from other logbooks or field sheets.
To ensure this process is consistent, if possible, photographs of the other parties' logbooks
or field sheet should be taken. The logbook should also document that this photograph(s) of
the data has been taken, who took the photograph, the date the photograph was taken, and
that the photograph is available for reference.
2.4 PRECAUTIONS
Custody of field logbooks must be maintained at all times. Field personnel must keep the
logbooks in a secure place (locked car, trailer, or field office) when the logbook is not in
personal possession. Logbooks are official project documents and must be treated as such.
