SUGGESTED OPERATING PROCEDURE
INDOOR AIR SAMPLING
1 OVERVIEW/PREMISE
This section describes the methodology for indoor air sampling.
2 PROCEDURE
Indoor air quality monitoring presents challenges that must be addressed prior to the collection
of samples to ensure the data collected are representative and accurately reflect the risk level due
to vapor intrusion. Risk based screening levels for many compounds are lower than typical
background levels so there is a risk of compounds being identified in indoor air and being
incorrectly attributed to vapor intrusion instead of background/ambient levels (Dawson and
McAlary, 2009). In addition, indoor air typically contains volatile organic compounds due to
background sources such as:
• Occupant activities such as cooking and smoking.
• Consumer products, e.g., scented candles, cleaners, beauty products, and
deodorizers.
• Building materials, e.g., carpets, glues, and paint.
Furthermore, analysis of samples for chemicals that are not among the Facility-related chemicals
will exacerbate the level of effort required to assess and communicate these background
contributions. To address concerns regarding background sources within the buildings, concerted
efforts will be made to remove,if possible and agreed to by the owner, any containers of products
potentially containing VOCs from the interior of the properties prior to indoor air sampling and
occupants will be provided with instructions to help minimize activities that might contribute
VOCs to indoor air. Similarly, samplers should avoid handling hazardous substances (e.g.,
gasoline), using permanent markers, wearing or applying fragrances, and smoking before and
during the sampling event.
2.1 SAMPLING SURVEY AND INSTRUCTION TO OCCUPANTS
A survey will be conducted with any property owners and building occupants to provide relevant
information, secure access agreements, review instructions to occupants and conduct a pre-
sampling survey.
1 2020
