Upon receipt of a signed access agreement, a detailed building survey will be conducted to
identify construction types and occupant background factors that may affect sample collection
and results. In addition, the following will be completed to the extent practicable and with the
occupants' permission as part of the building survey:
• Photographs will be taken to document current building conditions and potential
chemical background sources;
• The building will be screened with a hand-held PID capable of detecting VOCs to
aid in the detection of potential background chemical sources; and
• Operation of the heating and cooling system will be documented.
The results of the survey will be taken into consideration when selecting locations for the
collection of indoor air sampling. Best efforts will be made to identify all containers of consumer
products that potentially include VOCs, and temporarily relocate them to secure storage outside
of the property, either in a lock-box,or a detached garage for a minimum of two days prior to any
sampling. This will require agreement from the owner and occupants and may not be acceptable
to the owner and occupants given the potential disruption to their activities. In such event, an
evaluation will need to be made to determine whether indoor air sampling is appropriate to
evaluate vapor intrusion potential or whether alternative methods need to be used.
To the extent practical, a period of time (target 48 hours) will be allowed after the removal of
potential interior sources and before the start of sample collection(length of time to be determined
after discussion with building occupants). If potential background sources cannot be controlled
with the cooperation of the occupants of the buildings, samples will not be collected.
2.2 INDOOR AIR SAMPLES
Samples of indoor air will be collected using 6-liter Summa®canisters with a flow controller set
to collect a time-integrated sample (8-hours or 24 hours depending of the risk scenario being
evaluated). The canisters will be placed within the breathing zone (3 to 5 feet above the floor)
and on the main floor (and potentially other areas) of the building. Samples should be collected
in occupied areas likely to have the highest concentrations (e.g., areas with lower air exchange
rates, basements, etc). An indoor air sampling form will be completed with each sample, and a
photograph of the canister and surrounding area will be taken.
2.3 CRAWL SPACE AIR SAMPLES
Samples of indoor air will be collected using 6-liter Summa®canisters with a flow controller set
to collect a time-integrated sample. If access limitations exist, Summa® canisters may be placed
2 2020
