The USEPA Stage 4 validation consists of the items likes for USEPA Stage 2A and the
following:
• Review of the initial and continuing calibration for each method;
• Review of instrument specific qualify control (ex. Tune checks, interference
checks) for applicable methods; and
• Recalculation of reported results from the raw instrument outputs.
Data will be validated according to analytical method specifications, laboratory
standard operating procedures, this QAPP, and applicable guidelines set forth in the
following source as appropriate:
• USEPA, 2001b. Region 9 Superfund Data EvaluationNalidation Guidance EPA
R9QA/006.1. December.
• USEPA, 2020. National Functional Guidelines for Inorganic Superfund Methods
Data Review, EPA 542-R-20-006. November.
• USEPA, 2020. National Functional Guidelines for Organic Superfund Methods
Data Review, EPA 540-R-20-005. November.
The data verification/validation will be requested based on project need by the Project
Manager. The data verification/validation task will be performed and documented by
the QA Manager. The QA Manager will assess whether the objectives for the analytical
data have been met and apply appropriate data qualifiers as necessary. In any area not
specifically addressed by the above sources, best professional judgment will be utilized
and described in the data validation document. Data validation qualifiers will indicate
whether results are considered estimated or rejected. Only rejected data are considered
unusable for decision-making purposes; however, other qualified data may require
further evaluation.
Results of the data validation will be documented and summarized in a data validation
memorandum. The memorandum is submitted to the Project Manager for review. The
Project Manager is responsible for communicating significant issues relating to the data
verification/validation process to client.
Appendix C 17
