INTRODUCTION <br /> 1.1 Overview <br /> This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was prepared to direct field personnel in the <br /> method for describing soil samples in test pits, soil borings, and soil grab samples. The <br /> SOP conforms to ASTM Standard D 2488, Standard Practice for Description and <br /> Identification of Soils (Visual-Manual Procedure) and other pertinent technical <br /> publications. <br /> This SOP will be implemented in accordance with the following governing documents: <br /> • RI/FS Work Plan, which provides an overview of the site background and <br /> conceptual model and describes the overall investigative goals and scope of work <br /> for the RI/FS; <br /> • Health and Safety Plan (HASP), which identifies all physical, chemical, and <br /> biological hazards relevant to each field task and provides hazard mitigators to <br /> address these hazards; <br /> • Field Sampling Plan(FSP),which provides details for field sampling locations and <br /> procedures and which will be most frequently used by field staff on-site; and <br /> • Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), which is written to establish protocols <br /> necessary to ensure that the data generated are of a quality sufficient to ensure that <br /> valid conclusions are drawn from the site characterization. <br />
