Foothill Sanitary Landfill – Seismic Characterization 3 03.18.2015
moment magnitude earthquake of 7.00 (USGS, 2008). The maximum moment magnitude of 7.00
has been selected as the MCE for this fault zone.
3.3 Mount Diablo
The Mount Diablo Fault is a thrust fault, characterized by a total fault length of 25.0 km, a fault
plane width of approximately 12.9 km, and a reported slip rate of 2.0 mm/year (USGS, 2008).
The Mount Diablo Fault is approximately 84.5 km from the Landfill site with a reported
maximum moment magnitude earthquake of 6.70 (USGS, 2008). The maximum moment
magnitude of 6.70 has been selected as the MCE for this fault zone.
3.4 Orgalita
The Orgalita Fault is a strike-slip fault, characterized by a total fault length of 70.0 km, a fault
plane width of approximately 11.0 km, and a reported slip rate of 1.0 mm/year (USGS, 2008).
The Orgalita Fault is approximately 89.4 km from the Landfill site with a reported maximum
moment magnitude earthquake of 7.10 (USGS, 2008). The maximum moment magnitude of 7.10
has been selected as the MCE for this fault zone.
3.5 Green Valley
The Green Valley Fault is a strike-slip fault, characterized by a total fault length of 56.0 km, a
fault plane width of approximately 7.3 km, and a reported slip rate of 4.7 mm/year (USGS,
2008). The Green Valley Fault is approximately 93.4 km from the Landfill site with a reported
maximum moment magnitude earthquake of 6.80 (USGS, 2008). The maximum moment
magnitude of 6.80 has been selected as the MCE for this fault zone.
3.6 Calaveras (CN+CC+CS)
The three segments that comprise the Calaveras Fault zone were selected for this seismic
characterization: CN - Northern Calaveras, CC - Central Calaveras, and CS - Southern Calveras.
The Calaveras Fault is a strike-slip fault, characterized by a total fault length of 123.0 km, a fault
plane width of approximately 4.8 km, and an unreported slip rate (USGS, 2008). The Calaveras
Fault is approximately 94.6 km from the Landfill site with a reported maximum moment
magnitude earthquake of 7.03 (USGS, 2008). The maximum moment magnitude of 7.03 has
been selected as the MCE for this fault zone.
3.7 Hayward / Rodgers Creek (RC+HN+HS)
The three segments that comprise the Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault zone were selected for this
seismic characterization: RC - Rodgers Creek, HN - Northern Hayward, HS - Southern
Hayward. The Hayward / Rodgers Creek Fault is a strike-slip fault, characterized by a total fault
length of 150.0 km, a fault plane width of approximately 8.8 km, and a reported slip rate of 9.0
mm/year (USGS, 2008). The Hayward / Rodgers Creek Fault zone is approximately 102.5 km
from the Landfill site with a reported maximum moment magnitude earthquake of 7.33 (USGS,
2008). The maximum moment magnitude of 7.33 has been selected as the MCE for this fault
zone.
