If SVOCs, PAHs, and PCBs were not detected at concentrations above the analytical RL
in any subsurface mil sample, but no mend is encountered in any of the borehole% then
DOE would discuss the nrnd fur additional borehole drilling and sampling with EPA.
Onto Evolunion: As discussed in Section 3.1, medal and other debris was encountered in 5
of the 13 borsholes, and several soil samples were collected pm insist pi«es
encountered to modules far SVOCMAI I and PCB analysis. Therefore, no additional
borehole drilling and sampling for SVOC/PAH and PCB analysis was required to obtain
samples near men idebris.
3. If SVOCs, PAHs, and/or PCBs were detected in subsurface suit samples at concentrations
above analytical Rls and the sample results indicate the extent of contamination may not
be fully defined no'ginnlly and/or vertically, then OOVLLNL would discuss the need
for and type of additional soil sampling with the regulatory agencies.
Dane Ev bmdonr As no SVOCs or PAHs were detected N subsurface soil samples at
centantrations: above analytical RLs, no evaluation ofthhe definition of the extent ofthese
rtnsubsurface soil was required. PCBs were detected at concentrations above
theiatalytical method RL. Therefore, an evaluation of the luorbsental and lateral extent
of these constitmnts was conducted to determine if additional sampling was needed m
identify their extern in subsurface and, This evaluation determined that the count of
PCBS in subsurface sail was adequately defined horizontally and vertically. The results
of this evaluation arc dismissed in more detail in Section 41.1
4. If SVOCs, PAHs, and/or PCBs were dclemed at concentrations above RLs and the
sample results indicate the extent gconturrination
n subsurface soil is defined vertically
and horizontally (as def ed by non-detections), thenDOE/LLNL would pfoceed with the
evaluation of the constituent concentrations detected against regulatory screening levels
(i.e., EPA industrial soil RSLq.
Outs Evnluatian: As no SVOCs or PAHs were detected in subsurface soil samples at
corwentratims above analytical RLs, no evaluation of these constituents in subsurface
soil aping regulatory screening levels was balaiced. The concentrations of PCBs
delemed in subsurface soil samples were compared to EPA industrial and residential
RSLs and the MCL-based Protection of Ground Water Soil Screening Level (SSE). PCH
were below these regulatory screening levels in all mil samples in all
borehodes` The results of this evaluation are discussed in more detail in Section 4.2.1 .
5. If SVOCs, PAHs, and/or PCBs were detecting a above regulatory
screening levels (i.e., EPA soil RSLg in substance soil samples, then IIOMLNL would
evaluate risk and potential threat to ground water associated with thus constituents using
site spessific dean.
The specific metliods to conduct the evaluation of risk and threat to ground water would
be discussed with the regulatory agencies in the event that SVOCs, PAI Is, and/or PCBs
are detected in the subsurface soil samples.
Data Evaluation: Because SVOCs and PAHs were not detected above their analytical
reporting limits, and concentrations of PCBs in all soil samples were below regulatory
screening levels, no termer evaluation of risk and threat to ground water was required.
