1.4 Groundwater Corrective Action
The POC groundwater treatment system (GWTS) has operated since 1994 to mitigate VOC impacts in
groundwater. Five groundwater extraction wells are currently operated as part of the GWTS (EW-1, EW-2,
EW-3R, EW-4, and EW-5). A sixth extraction well (EW-3) is no longer operated due to low extraction rates and
was replaced by deeper well EW-3R in August 2009. In October 2019, additional groundwater extraction well EW-
5 was added to the GWTS.
The extracted groundwater is currently treated by two 10,000-pound granular-activated carbon (GAC)vessels
installed in January 2020. Historically, the extracted groundwater was treated by an air stripper(through May
2018), four 2,000-pound GAC vessels (through November 2018), and then by two 6,000-pound GAC vessels
