KLE/NFELOER (H e a l t h&
Safety
Procedure HSP-5-07 Version 10
NOISE AND HEARING Number: Number:
PROTECTION Published Revised
Date: 5/4/2018 Date: N/A
• Caring for and maintaining noise and hearing protection as instructed, guarding
them against damage, and storing them in clean, sanitary locations.
• Informing Supervisor or the VP of Health and Safety of any noise and hearing
protection issues that they feel are not adequately addressed in the workplace,
and of any other concerns that they have regarding this program.
5-07.5 Permissible Exposure Limits
The permissible exposure limits (PEL's) in Table I refer to sound pressure levels
and durations of exposure that represent conditions under which it is believed that
nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed without adverse effect on their
ability to hear and understand normal speech. These levels shall not be exceeded
as determined by an 8- hour time weighted average (TWA 8) exposure (see note
below). When the 8-hour time weighted average is in excess of the PEL,
engineering or administrative controls should be implemented. PPE, such as ear
muffs or plugs are only used as temporary means of protection or where other
means are not feasible.
5-07.5.1 Noise Exposure Limits
When daily noise exposure is composed of two or more periods of noise
exposures of different levels, their combined effect should be considered, rather
than the individual effect of each. If the sum of the following fractions:
C,/T,+C2/T2+...An/Tn,exceeds unity, then, the mixed exposure should be
considered to exceed the limit value:
• An indicates the total time of exposure at a specified noise level
• Tn indicates the total time of exposure permitted at that level
The values in Table 1 apply to total duration of exposure per working day
regardless of whether this is one continuous exposure or a number of short-term
exposures, but does not apply to impact or impulsive types of noise.
Copyright 2019 Kleinfelder, Inc.
