KLE/NFELOER (H e a l t h&
Safety
Procedure HSP-5-07 Version 10
NOISE AND HEARING Number: Number:
PROTECTION Published Revised
Date: 5/4/2018 Date: N/A
5-07.7.2.1 Engineering Controls
Engineering change, modification, or alternation is used to reduce noise to non-
injurious levels for the prevention of hearing loss. Application of known principles
of noise control usually can reduce noise to a desired degree; however, economic
considerations and/or operational necessities may make the application
impractical. Where practical methods of reducing noise to safe levels can be
developed, they shall be adopted. Such methods may include alternative
equipment design; vibration isolation; or dampening, enclosures, and barriers.
5-07.7.2.2 Administrative Controls
Reduction of exposure time can be a practical method of reducing noise hazards.
Where the exposure can be limited and interspersed with recovery periods in non-
injurious noise areas, Table 1 may be used as a guide.
5-07.7.2.3 Personnel Hearing Protection
Where it is not feasible to reduce environmental noise to acceptable levels, hearing
protection is provided at no cost to the employee. Common forms are insertable
ear plugs and ear muffs. Plugs inserted into the ear canals must form a tight seal
in order to obtain the full noise exclusion of which they are capable.
5-07.7.3 Posting of Noise Hazard Area
Warning signs shall be appropriately located at entrances and/or the periphery of
areas there is sustained environmental noise in excess of the limits prescribed in
Table I. Signs, approximately 9"x12" should contain the following or similar
message: DANGER; NOISE HAZARD! HEARING PROTECTION REQUIRED
BEYOND THIS POINT!
5-07.7.4 Planning Hazard Free Operation
Every effort shall be made at the planning stage to minimize noise exposure. At
this stage, the HSM shall provide assistance.
5-07.7.4.1 Noise Abatement in Engineering Design
The HSM in collaboration with Site Safety Officers, Project Managers and other
field staff shall consider potentially hazardous noise exposures on all worksites.
They shall incorporate production features, such as the isolation of noisy
machines, and utilize all other available means to minimize noise exposures to
personnel.
Copyright 2019 Kleinfelder, Inc.
