S y
5-07.7.4.2 Noise Rating of Future Equipment Installations
Consideration should be given to the possible noise exposures caused by new
equipment, or when new sites are planned. Where hazardous noise exposures
are likely to result from use of the proposed equipment, noise data should be
obtained from manufacturers so that realistic estimates of noise exposure can be
made and steps taken to design the site to reduce these levels.
5-07.7.5 Audiometry
All employees shall have baseline audiograms taken at the time of their first
medical examination by the Occupational Medical Clinic. Exams shall be
conducted only when preceded by a minimum of 14 hours of non-exposure to
workplace noise. When evaluating the potential of employee hazard, the noise
reduction by hearing protection shall not be included. If there are indications that
hearing impairment can be attributed to an occupational noise environment, the
Medical Review Officer (MRO) shall advise the VP of Health and Safety.
For each employee exposed to at or above an 8-hour time-weighted average
above 85 decibels, an audiogram shall be conducted at least annually after
obtaining the baseline audiogram. Each employee's annual audiogram shall be
compared to that employee's baseline audiogram to determine if the audiogram is
valid and if a standard threshold shift has occurred. If a comparison of the annual
audiogram to the baseline audiogram indicates a standard threshold shift, the
employee shall be informed of this fact in writing by the MRO (defined in Section
3.3: Medical Surveillance) within 21 days of the determination. If a threshold shift
has occurred, use of hearing protection shall be re-evaluated and/or hearing
protection shall be refitted, and if necessary, a medical evaluation may be required.
5-07.7.6 Training and Education
All employees who routinely encounter potentially hazardous noise shall receive
training and education upon hire, and at least annually thereafter. Individuals
whose duties routinely entail exposure to hazardous noise shall be informed of the
effects of noise and the proper use and care of ear-protection devices before they
begin such duties.
Training program contents shall include types/magnitudes of noise encountered,
location or work processes that might expose employees to actionable levels of
noise; and PPE or other measures necessary to mitigate or eliminate exposure to
injurious noise levels.
5-07.8 Access to Records / Medical Monitoring
Records shall be maintained in the strictest of confidence, and managed as
directed per the Recordkeeping procedures (Section 2.4 of this Manual).
Employees, their representatives, the Federal or State Assistant Secretary and/or
Page 8 of 9 Copyright 2019 Kleinfelder, Inc
Important: When modifying this document, update properties with
your name, date, and nature of changes made.
