It can occur from <br /> exposure to conditions well above freezing. This condition can occur when a <br /> worker is immersed in cold water or is exposed to cool, high winds. Individuals <br /> who are in a state of physical exhaustion, are dehydrated, wearing wet clothing, or <br /> have had insufficient food are particularly susceptible to hypothermia. <br /> 5-09.5.1.1 Symptoms <br /> Hypothermia begins with uncontrollable shivering and the sensation of cold. The <br /> heartbeat slows and sometimes becomes irregular, the pulse weakens and the <br /> blood pressure changes. Severe shaking or rigid muscles are caused by bursts of <br /> body energy and changes in the body chemistry. Uncontrollable fits of shivering, <br /> vague or slow slurred speech, memory lapses, incoherence and drowsiness are <br /> some of the symptoms that can occur. Other symptoms that can be seen before <br /> complete collapse are: cool skin, slow, irregular breathing, low blood pressure, <br /> apparent exhaustion, and fatigue after rest. <br /> 5-09.5.1.2 First Aid <br /> Immediately remove the victim into a warm area. Remove wet clothes and cover <br /> with dry clothing or blankets. Do not warm the victim too quickly. Rapid warming <br /> could cause serious heart problems or increase circulation to body surface, <br /> causing additional cooling of vital organs.
