Put the frozen parts in warm (100-1050F) but not <br /> hot water. Handle them gently and do not rub or massage them. If the toes or <br /> fingers are affected, put dry, sterile gauze between them after warming them. <br /> Loosely bandage the injured parts. If the part has been thawed and refrozen, then <br /> you should re-warm it at room temperature. <br /> 5-09.5.3 Preventing Cold Stress <br /> In preventing cold stress, consider factors relating both to the individual and the <br /> environment. Acclimatization, water and salt replacement, medical screening, <br /> continuing medical supervision, proper work clothing, and training and education <br /> will contribute to the prevention of cold stress and injury related to working in a cold <br /> environment. Control of the environment involves engineering controls, work <br /> practices, work-rest schedules, environmental monitoring, and consideration of the <br /> wind-chill temperature. <br /> 5-09.5.4 Acclimatization <br /> Some degree of acclimatization may be achieved in cold environments. With <br /> sufficient exposure to cold, the body does undergo some changes that increase <br /> comfort and reduce the risk of cold injury. However, these physiological changes <br /> are usually minor and require repeated uncomfortably cold exposures to induce <br /> them. People who are physically unfit, older, obese, taking medications or using <br /> alcohol or drugs may not acclimatize readily. <br /> 5-09.5.5 Dehydration <br /> Working in cold areas causes significant water losses through the skin and lungs <br /> as a result of the dryness of the air. Increased fluid intake is essential to prevent <br /> dehydration, which affects the flow of blood to the extremities and increases the <br /> risk of cold injury. <br /> 5-09.5.6 Salt <br /> The body needs a certain amount of salt and other electrolytes to function properly. <br /> However, using salt tablets is not recommended. Salt tablets cause stomach <br /> irritation, which may include nausea and vomiting. A normal, balanced diet <br /> normally takes care of salt needs. However, heavy perspiration may require <br /> electrolyte replacement in addition to two quarts of water intake. The use of <br /> commercial electrolyte replacement should be used in accordance to <br /> manufacturer's recommended dosage.
