Restricted diets can deprive the body of elements needed to <br /> withstand cold stress. <br /> 5-09.6 Control Program <br /> A site-specific control program shall be implemented when employees are exposed <br /> to cold stress conditions. The program shall include medical supervision of <br /> workers, including pre-placement physicals that evaluate fitness, weight, the <br /> cardiovascular system, and other conditions that might make workers susceptible <br /> to cold stress. Medical evaluation during and after cold illnesses and a medical <br /> release for returning to work should be required. <br /> At a minimum, the program shall include: <br /> • Employee orientation and training on cold stress, cold-induced illnesses and <br /> their symptoms, water and salt replacement, proper clothing, work practices and <br /> emergency first aid procedures. <br /> • Work-rest regimens, with heated rest areas and enforced rest breaks. <br /> • Scheduled drink breaks for recommended fluids. <br /> • Environmental monitoring, using the air temperature and wind speed indices to <br /> determine wind chill and adjust work-rest schedules accordingly. <br /> • Reduction of cold stress through engineering and administrative controls, and <br /> the use of PPE. <br /> • Medical supervision of workers, including pre-placement physicals that evaluate <br /> fitness, weight, the cardiovascular system, and other conditions that might make <br /> worker susceptible to cold stress. <br /> • Medical evaluation during and after cold illnesses and a medical release for <br /> returning to work. <br /> • Employee orientation and training on cold stress, cold-induced illnesses and <br /> their symptoms, water and salt replacement, proper clothing, work practices, <br /> and emergency first aid procedures. <br /> • Work-rest regimens, with heated rest areas and enforced rest breaks. <br /> • Scheduled drink breaks for recommended fluids. <br /> • Environmental monitoring, using the air temperature and wind speed indices to <br /> determine wind chill and adjust work-rest schedules accordingly. <br /> Copyright 2019 Kleinfelder, Inc.
