Heat tends to promote <br /> accidents due to the slipperiness of sweaty palms, dizziness, or the fogging of <br /> safety glasses. frequency of accidents, in general appears to be higher in hot <br /> environments than in more moderate environmental conditions. One reason is that <br /> working in a hot environment lowers can cause dehydration, which can lower the <br /> mental alertness and physical performance of an individual. Increased body <br /> temperature and physical discomfort promote irritability, anger, and other <br /> emotional states, which sometimes cause workers to overlook safety procedures <br /> or to divert attention from hazardous tasks. Hyponatremia, resulting from drinking <br /> excessive fluids without sufficient electrolyte intake, can cause disorientation, <br /> nausea, seizures, kidney damage, and death. <br /> 5-08.6.2 Heat Exhaustion <br /> Heat exhaustion is caused by loss of body fluid and salt from sweating, decreased <br /> circulation to the vital organs, or both. The individual's blood supply is not <br /> adequate to regulate heat and meet other bodily needs. <br /> 5-08.6.2.1 Symptoms <br /> Heat exhaustion begins with muscular weakness, dizziness, nausea, and a <br /> staggering gait. Vomiting is frequent. The bowels may move involuntarily. The <br /> victim is very pale, the skin is clammy, and victim may perspire profusely.
