It starts with an understanding of how to safely store
and handle hazardous materials. Make sure that containers of products are securely stored on
the shelves. Whenever possible with palletized goods or overstock materials, stretch-wrap them
to pallets and place them in the overhead racking. '
Make sure you handle bagged goods carefully to minimize torn and broken bags. Using clear
tape, tape holes and tears in bags right away and make sure those are sold first. Promptly sweep t
up any spilled debris and manage appropriately.
Take advantage of secondary containment for liquid hazardous materials. Secondary
containment may be in the form of a plastic spill pallet or concrete bermed areas. Take care of '
damaged containers right away so leaks don't develop.
Secondary Containment
Secondary containment pallets and bermed areas outside will accumulate rain water periodically. '
It is very important to inspect these areas frequently, particularly after a rain storm, to check the
accumulated water for an oil sheen. If there is no sheen, then the water must be drained. If
hazardous material leaks or spills into secondary containment, it must be thoroughly cleaned right
