• Fire alarms '
• Public address systems
• Emergency shower(s)
As part of this training, walk your facility to make sure you know where the emergency equipment '
is located. If you don't know or can't find it, ask your DEA or contact the EHS Department.
Evacuation Procedures '
Some emergency situations such as fres or toxic chemical releases may dictate that the facility
be promptly evacuated. Make sure you are familiar with the emergency exits and routes of
egress at your facility as well as the internal alarm systems.
Your building may be equipped with fire alarm pull stations. These are typically located adjacent '
to exit doors. To activate the alarms, pull down sharply on the handle of the pull station. Your
building may have a fire sprinkler system. The system most likely has an internal flow alarm that '
will sound if water begins flowing through the sprinkler system. If your facility is equipped with a
public address system, make sure you know how to activate the PA system to sound the alarm.
If you rely on verbal notification to alert building occupants, be sure to practice sounding the
alarm during your annual fire drill. ,
Once the alarm has been sounded begin promptly directing associates and customers to the
closest and safest exits. Make sure associates accompany customers to the rally points. Make
sure you check offices and restrooms to ensure everyone is out of the building. Once everyone is '
out of the building, do not permit anyone to go back into the building until the fire department has
given the all clear.
Fighting Fires '
No associate is ever required to fight a fire with a fire extinguisher. If the fire is in its incipient
stage and is smaller than an office trash can, and if you have been trained and are comfortable,
and if you feel it is safe to do so, you may use a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire. Your only '
responsibility, however, is to exit the building and contact the fire department.
PART 2 ,
Emergency Response Procedures
Managers and/or Designated Environmental Associates (DEAs) are responsible for ensuring that '
the 24-Hour Emergency Incident Reporting Line flip chart is current and is posted at a minimum in
the Manager's office.
