samples were collected in clean brass sample tubes fitted within
the split spoon sampler.'Immediately upon the opening of the
sampler, the tubes were removed, the ends wrapped in aluminum
foil, fitted with plastic caps, sealed with black electrical
tape, labeled, and placed on dry ice. Advancement of the borings
to groundwater in the area of VTB-1 and VTB-2 was determined
to be unsafe due to the presence of overhead utility lines,
buildings, and trees. As a result, drilling in this area was
discontinued. Groundwater samples were collected from VTB-3
through VTB-5 by lowering a new, disposable bailer into each
boring to a point immediately below the surface of the water.
The water sample in each case was then transferred immediately
to two Volatile Organics Analysis (VOA) vials and one 1 liter
amber glass sampling bottle, promptly sealed with teflon -lined,
screw caps, labeled, and placed on blue ice.
Borings VTB-1 and VTB-2 were then grouted using a Portland
cement -5% bentonite mix under the supervision of Ms. Eleanor
Ratliff of the San Joaquin Local Health District. Slotted
PVC casing was placed in boring VTB-3, VTB-4 and VTB-5 for the
purpose of obtaining hydraulic gradient. Each of these three
borings was sealed at the ground surface and the groundwater
allowed to stabilize for a period of 24 hours.
All sampling equipment and augers were steam cleaned prior to
being brought on site and between all samplings. All tailings
from the borings were placed in DOT drums on site as required
by Ms. Ratliff.
Subsequent to the above, an attempt was made to place a boring
in the vacant field East of 1789 Charter Way. Due to the fact
that this field had recently been well billed, the drilling
rig was unable to enter the lot. As a result, it was decided
to obtain the necessary water samples through the placement
of well points. On August 24, 1989, one 7/8" diameter well
point was inserted 30 feet into the soil using a Bosh Chip
Hammer. As the clays were very stiff, the insertion of the well
point was -made only after considerable effort (extraction of
the well point also proved difficult). Upon the removal of
the well point, it was found to be dry with no groundwater having
been encountered. Due to the difficulties experienced during
the well point insertion, this sampling approach was abandoned
and a four-wheel drive drill rig was scheduled for August 30,
1989 so that sampling could be completed in this area.
On August 16, 1989, hydraulic gradient was determined by Mr.
Floyd; and exploratory soil borings VTB-6 through VTB-8 were
advanced to groundwater and water samples obtained with equipment
decontaminated as described above (See Site Map #2 for exact
location of borings). Borings VTB-3 through VTB-8 were grouted
as previously referenced, again as required by the San Joaquin
'"' Local Health District.
