XIFCI*l%k INC
Letter to Ms. Letitia Resch
February 7, 1989
Page 2
Each soil core and drive sample will be examined with an Organic
Vapor Analyzer (OVA) meter using headspace analytical procedures in
order to determine, in the field, if potential contamination exists.
Representative samples of the soil will be placed in a glass jar. The
jar will be sealed and the sample shaken. After 10 minutes a small hole
will be made in the seal and the headspace above the sample will be P1
analyzed for organic compounds with the OVA meter.
Samples from any contaminated zones identified with the OVA meter
will be submitted for laboratory analysis. At least five soil samples
will be collected from each borehole during drilling. The samples will Q
be collected in brass tubes and will be fitted with an air-tight lid.
The tubes will be packed as full as possible with the soil to minimize
the headspace. A minimum of 15 soil samples will be collected, at
least three of which will be submitted for analysis for Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel fuel by EPA Method 8015M, TPH as gasoline 7
by EPA Method 5030 (purge and trap, LOFT Manual ) , and for benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020. The
laboratory analyses will be performed by Trace Analysis Laboratory, a
State-certified laboratory.
All sample containers will be decontaminated in a laboratory. The
decontamination procedures for field sampling are given below.
1. Sampling equipment is nondedicated. As such, it must be f
carefully cleaned prior to each use, as follows:
a. Carefully brush off any loose foreign debris with a soft
bristle brush.
b. Rinse the equipment thoroughly in clean water.
c. Wash the equipment in a nonphosphate detergent bath.
d. Rinse thoroughly in clean water.
e. Rinse thoroughly with deionized water.
f. Rinse with acetone.
g. Rinse with pesticide-grade hexane.
h. Air dry in a dust-free environment.
2. Clean, disposable gloves will be worn by all field personnel
when handling decontaminated equipment.
