BP Chemical Facility (SJCEHD Site Code 2042), 3437 S. Airport Way, Stockton, CA February 3, 1993
Ms. Margaret Lagorio, REHS 2
SOIL SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS
On December 28, 1992, after the excavation had been extended by approximately three feet along each
sidewall and two feet from the bottom, soil samples were collected and analyzed by a on-site mobile
state-certified laboratory. One sample from each sidewall and two samples from the excavation bottom
was collected. Each sample was tested for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and
total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline. Based on the analytical results from the mobile
laboratory, soil samples with concentrations below the cleanup goals were subsequently submitted for
analysis of ethylene dibromide and total lead.
On December 28, 1992, the initial sample from the west wall (Sample ID 1WW) contained hydrocarbons
above the cleanup goals. The west wall of the excavation was extended approximately two additional
feet, and a second sample collected (Sample ID 2WW) and analyzed. The results indicated that Sample
2WW also contained hydrocarbons above the cleanup objectives.
On January 5, 1993, the western wall of the excavation was extended approximately five additional feet.
A sample from the west wall (Sample 1D 3WW) was collected and submitted for chemical analysis.
Samples of the stockpiled soil were also collected and analyzed.
A representative from the SJCEHD was present and observed the soil sampling procedures and sample
locations. The analytical results are presented and discussed below.
ANALYTICAL RESULTS
The analytical results are presented on Tables 1 and 2, and the laboratory data sheets are attached. As
shown on Table 1, with the exception of total xylenes in Sample 1SW, concentrations of petroleum fuel
hydrocarbons in samples from sidewalls of the final extent of excavation are below cleanup objectives.
The sample from the southern wall (Sample ID 1SW) contained a residual concentration of total xylenes
(0.023 parts per million [ppm]) which is very near the cleanup object (0.015 ppm). Because the
detected concentration of total xylenes in Sample 1 SW was very law and nearly at the cleanup objective,
the southern extent of the excavation was not extended.
Residual concentrations of ethylene dibromide were not reported above the method detection limit
(MDL) in any of the excavation sidewall or excavation bottom soil samples tested. Total lead
concentrations ranged from below MDL (5 ppm) to 5.9 ppm.
Samples from the stockpiled soil were also analyzed (Table 2). Low concentrations of petroleum
hydrocarbons were detected in the stockpiled soil samples analyzed. Total lead concentrations ranged
from 8.1 ppm to 42 ppm.
LR2258A1.0 K
GROUNDWATER
TECHNOLOGY,INC.
