Interdepartmental letterhead ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION DEPARTMENT
Mail Station: L-633 OPERATIONS AND REGULATORY AFFAIRS DIVISION
Ext: 2-6920
e-mail: mancieril®llnl.gov
March 5, 1999
TO: Rob Tageson, L-874
FROM: Sav Mancieri, Environmental Analyst,
Environmental Operations Group
SUBJECT: Addendum to Air Compressor Condensate Characterization Memo
As requested by Hector Pedemonte, Hazardous Waste Management (HWM)
Chemist, I am including additional information that was not included in the
characterization memo dated January 13, 1998. As stated in the January 13, 1998
memo, the waste was generated by Site 300 Plant Engineering Maintenance .
Shop personnel as a result of routine maintenance operations that required the
blow down of air compressors. The waste was characterized as non -hazardous
based on a review of representative composite sampling analytical data and fish
bioassay results. Also, as documented in the January 13, 1998 memo, Michael
Gage, HWM Chemist for Site 300, had reviewed the supporting data and
concurred with my characterization.
However, the following information was not included in the January 13, 1998
memo.
The air compressors use Unocal Turbine Oil 100 and CITGO A/W Hydraulic Oil
68 as a lubricating fluid. The small amount of oil is visible as a thin layer on the
condensate. There are trace amounts of organic solvents present in the
wastestream; however, the concentrations do not exceed hazardous waste limits.
The wastestream contains 170 mg/1 oil and grease.
As requested by Hector Pedemonte, please attach a copy of this memo with the
Waste Disposal Requisition.
If you have any questions, please contact me at extension 4-6684 or pager 04002.
E099-076/ kp
University of California
6 Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory
