Inspection Report
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories
Site 300
Inspection date - October 28 and 29, 2003
observed all drums and containers of hazardous waste were managed with the lids closed. All containers had
hazardous waste labels with all of the required information and also there was a Waste Disposal Requistion
(WDR) inside a plasitc envelope attached to each container. Prior to leaving this area I operated the eye wash
and shower, both worked quite adequately. After exiting this area I observed the spill control equipment, fire
extinguishers, which are located outside and immediately to the right of the entrance.
The permitted portion of EWSF, Bldg. 883, has a storage limit of 3300 gallons. A check of the inventory
indicated that it currently held ### gallons. I requested and received a current inventory list for this area
(Attachment G). I reviewed the inspection logs. For details and results of the documents review see section
three of this report. No violations were observed in this area.
We then went over to the generator side and did a brief inspection of this area. Again, Mr. Anderson entered
with his monitoring equipment and determined that it was safe to enter. He did advise me that over in the
northwest corner was a drum that was hot and we should maintain a safe distance. This drum held NRC
regulated hazardous waste and was not subject to my inspection. I observed that the 90 -day storage
containers were managed with all lids closed and all of them had hazardous waste labels which had all of the
required information on them. Mr. Shih and I reviewed the inspection log for this area. I observed no violations
in this area.
BLDG. 851:
I then went on to one of the generator location, Bldg. 851. We were introduced to Mr. White who is the facility
Manager for Bldg. 851. Bldg. 851 is one of three firing tables with a SAA. The wastes generated are low level
radioactive waste and photographic waste. We were given a briefing on the safety guidelines to follow while in
this building. At my request, Mr. White explained that the photographic waste is generated in Room 108, the x-
ray dark room, and in Room 116, the photo processing room. I observed the SAA's for Room 108 & 116. The
containers used for accumulation in Rooms 116 and 108 respectively, were observed to be closed and labeled
with all of the required information.
MAGAZINE 816:
1 then made my observations of Magazine 816, which is identified in the Part B as a permitted EWSF for HE
DTSC (3/95) Page 8 of 12
