BoReTech
• Use only appropriate containers (normally 55 -gallon steel drums; or plastic drums
for corrosive wastes)
• Place and store containers in a manner that allows emergency personnel and
equipment to easily maneuver throughout the area and to allow inspection of
each drum (a minimum of 3 feet in aisles and between rows of drums)
• Before moving a container, ensure that the container has not leaked, and that the
container is closed so that it can be transferred safely
• Ensure that waste is not placed in containers that previously held incompatible
materials. Hazardous waste must not be placed in unwashed containers that
previously held an incompatible material, or added to containers holding an
incompatible material
2.2.4.2 Special Wastes Requirements
• Keep ignitable wastes at least 50 feet from property line
• Designate accumulation and storage areas for ignitable hazardous wastes in
areas away from sources of ignition. Post "No Smoking" signs in areas where
these wastes are handled
• Electronically ground metal containers of flammable liquids to avoid fire hazards.
Use of a bonding strip and ground clamps is a common method
• Ensure that incompatible wastes (e.g., acidic and basic hazardous wastes) are
separated, by distance, curbs or berms, or separate secondary containment
pallets
• Install a NFPA Hazard diamond on the outside wall of the storage structure or in
a clearly visible location near the storage area
• Ensure that the Waste Storage Area is neat and orderly
• Place appropriate spill control supplies at or near each accumulation and storage
area. The supplies must include absorbent materials and personnel protective
equipment for employees to respond to an incident
• Ensure prior to accumulating any hazardous waste in an area that the area is
free of cracks, joints or drains on the surface which might allow spills or leaks to
enter the soil, groundwater or drainage system
• Post proper signs "No Smoking," "Fire Hazard," "Danger" or whatever is
appropriate
• Ensure that the storage area is protected from weather, fire, physical damage,
and vandals, and that the facility is maintained and operated to minimize the
possibility of fire, explosion or release of hazardous waste
• Ensure that the hazardous waste accumulation is conducted so hazardous waste
or hazardous waste constituents cannot escape into the soil, directly or indirectly,
into surface or groundwater, or into storm drains or sewer drains
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 112
