BoReTec}
2.2.5 Hazardous Waste Container Labeling
• Place a hazardous waste label on each container accumulating hazardous waste
• The label must be placed on the container as soon as the first drop of waste is
placed in the container. The label must be placed on the outside, upper one-third
portion of the container
• Each hazardous waste label must state the following information:
o "Hazardous Waste"
o Accumulation Start Date: Enter the date when any (even one drop of liquid
or one contaminated rag) waste material is first placed in the container. If
the container is emptied by a hauler/recycler and reused to collect and
store additional waste, the old label must be removed and a new label
must be placed on the container showing the new accumulation start date.
Do not simply cross out the old date and insert a new date.
o Name and address of the property for which the waste is generated
o Facility -specific EPA Number (see Section 1.4.1)
o Contents Composition: Enter a brief description of the waste by entering
the product name/common name and concentration of constituents (if
available)
o Physical State: Check either solid or liquid material
o Hazardous Properties: Check the "Flammable," "Toxic," "Corrosive," or
"Other" (e.g., water reactive) boxes as appropriate for the wastes
contained
o Proper DOT Shipping Name: Enter a shipping name that best describes
the waste. Refer to Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP)
hazardous materials inventory for correct naming convention
• A hazardous waste label must remain on a hazardous waste container while
accumulating hazardous waste
• Remove incomplete, severely torn, or illegible labels and replace them with
correct labels immediately
• Hazardous waste labels can be preprinted for routine waste streams under the
guidance of the Boretech facility manager. There are vendors that provide this
service.
• Hazardous waste labels must be completed with a permanent felt-tip pen or
typed to prevent rub -off.
• Shipping Labels: In addition to the hazardous waste label specified above,
certain hazardous waste containers must have a U.S. DOT diamond-shaped
Hazard Class Warning Label (such as "Flammable Liquid," "Corrosive,"
"Nonflammable Gas," and "Poison"). These labels are required to be applied prior
to transporting offsite.
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 113
