BoReTech)m
• Empty Drum Labels: Empty drums must be labeled with the word "Empty" and
the date which they were emptied. Empty drums must be properly emptied prior
to being labeled and shipped as such. See Section 3.0 for a discussion on the
criteria for determining whether a container is empty.
2.2.6 Weekly Hazardous Waste Storage Area Inspections
Hazardous waste storage areas must be inspected weekly and should be performed by
the facility plant manager or by properly trained staff. These inspections shall be
documented.
Hazardous waste containers are to be inspected once per week for the following
conditions:
• Open Containers. Containers may only be opened when being filled or when
transferring material to another container. If drums are found with missing bungs,
lids, or rings, during the inspection, the missing items must be replaced
immediately
• Labels. Ensure that all hazardous waste labels on waste containers are clearly
visible from the aisle space adjacent to the containers
• Mislabeled Drums. If drums are found to have no hazardous waste labels or
incomplete labels (e.g., no accumulation date), immediately place completed
labels on the drums. See Section 2.4 for labeling procedures
• Corrosion. If corroded hazardous waste containers are found, arrange for the
immediate transfer of any corroded container to an overpack container (i.e., a
larger container) or new container
• Damage. If damaged or leaking hazardous waste containers are found,
immediately transfer the contents of any dented, bulging or damaged container to
an overpack containers or another container, and clean up any leaking waste.
Place the cleaned up waste in properly labeled containers
• Incompatible Wastes. Separate any incompatible wastes by means of a dike,
berm, wall or other device
• Container Storage. Maintain a minimum distance of three feet between rows (i.e.,
rows of pallets) of hazardous waste containers
• Housekeeping. Store containers in an orderly manner
• Secondary Containment. If the secondary containment structure shows any signs
of deterioration, which may compromise the integrity of the containment, correct
or replace immediately. If liquids are observed in the secondary containment
structure, arrange to remove the liquid (e.g., rainwater, waste, etc.) within 24
hours. Liquid must not be allowed to stand in the waste containment for more
than 24 hours.
• Spill Supplies. Confirm that spill cleanup supplies and safety gear are present
and accessible
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 114
