® Document Number: 909 R 5003
PILKINGTON
Procedure Rev: 5 Date: 5/24/07
EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES
Building Products
Batch Material Storage Silos
Batch materials such as sand, soda ash, and limestone are delivered by rail and truck
and stored in large vertical silos. The batch house storage room is where dry glass
colorant chemicals are stored. Chemicals included cobalt oxide and nickel oxide.
Melting Furnace
The glass melting furnace utilizes batch materials in the manufacturing of glass. This is
a continuously operating process. The furnace (ceramic refractory lined) melts and
holds liquid glass. The refractory brick does not contain hexavalent chromium.
As the liquid glass leaves the furnace, it is cooled and formed. The cooling and forming
processes are extensive but are necessary in order to manufacture glass that meets the
required specification.
Glass Forming & Lehr
A number of compressed gases are used in the manufacturing of glass. Their addition
to the process occurs during either the forming of the glass or annealing process.
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) is injected into the glass bath lift out area beneath the glass sheet
to aid in the prevention of roll marks on the bottom side of the glass, and to prevent the
glass from sticking to the rolls. A S02 dispensing port is located outside the lehr. Two
1 ton cylinders are located there: one for dispensing and one on standby. There is a
third 1 ton cylinder located about 50 feet away as a back up (not connected).
Glass Capping
The continuous ribbon of glass must be cut into various sizes. The capping table uses
cross cutters to do the cutting across the ribbon, with slit cutters to cut width of the
ribbon. The glass breaks along the line of least resistance when it is flexed over a high
909R5003 Rev. 5/20/04
