 u
13. LEL (lower explosive limit): The minimum concentration of a combustible
gas or vapor in air (usually expressed in percent by volume) which will
ignite if an ignition source is present.
14. Permit: The permit to enter is a written authorization and approval for
work that requires entrance into a permit-required confined space
(Appendix A).
15. Permit-Required Confined Space (Permit Space): A confined space that
contains or has a potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere, contains a
material that has the potential for engulfing an Entrant, has an internal
configuration such that an Entrant would be trapped or asphyxiated by
inward converging walls, or contains any other recognized serious safety or
health hazard.
16. Purging: The method by which gases, vapors, or other airborne impurities
are displaced from a confined space. This may involve such measures as
mechanical ventilation, steam ventilation, or introducing another gas such as
nitrogen or carbon dioxide to control flammable vapors.
17. Respirator: A device that covers the mouth and nose, whole face or head
and either cleans contaminated air or provides Grade D breathing air.
18. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus: A full facepiece respirator which
supplies Grade D breathing air to the user from a portable air cylinder.
19. Supplied Air (Air Line) Respirator: A respirator to which clean breathable
air is supplied from a fixed source through a pressurized line.
20. Testing: The process by which the hazards that may confront Entrants of a
permit space are identified and evaluated.
ADNiMS/CONSP 5 June 2, 1994
