Using other than approved bedding and backfill
materials without Containment Solutions's prior writ-
ten approval will void the tank warranty and may result
in tank failure.
DO NOT
♦ Mix approved backfill with sand or native soil.
♦ Backfill tank with sand or native soil.
CAUTION
Using unapproved backfill material may
result in tank failure and environmental
contamination.
A3. PRE -INSTALLATION TESTING
Do not pressurize tanks over 5 psi (3 PSI FOR 12'
DIAMETER TANKS). Tank damage or physical injury
can result.
♦ Make sure you understand these instructions. If in
doubt, call Tank Technical Support.
VISUAL AIR/SOAP TEST - TO BE PERFORMED ON
ALL TANKS PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
❑ Warm weather soap solution - 5 gallons of water
with 8 ounces of household dishwashing detergent.
❑ Freezing conditions soap solution - substitute 1 gal-
lon of automotive windshield washer solution for 1
gallon of water.
❑ Cover entire tank outer surface with soap solution.
(Exception - double-wall tanks with liquid filled an-
nular space.)
❑ Cover all fittings with soap solution.
❑ Carefully inspect for leaks as indicated by bubbles.
❑ Roll tank to inspect bottom. Ensure fittings and/or
collars do not contact ground.
♦ In the unlikely event a tank leak is discovered, discon-
tinue the installation and immediately call Contain-
ment Solutions Field Service to schedule a repair.
♦ Prepare fittings for testing
❑ Remove fitting plugs.
❑ Clean factory pipe dope from plugs and fittings.
❑ Apply pipe dope suitable for the material being
stored in the tank.
❑ Reinstall and tighten fitting plugs.
TESTING SINGLE-WALL TANKS
These tests must be performed before installing tanks:
♦ Pressurize tanks.
❑ 4' through 10' diameter tanks to 5 psi maximum.
12' diameter tanks to 3 psi maximum.
❑ A contractor supplied pressure relief valve must be
connected to the primary tank for additional pro-
tection. The relief valve should be sized and set
to prevent the tank from being pressurized in ex-
cess of the maximum allowed test pressure.
♦ Maintain test pressure and continue inspection for at
least 30 minutes.
♦ At the same time, cover tank outer surface with soap
solution (see Visual Air/Soap Test).
DO
♦ Use a maximum 15 psi air gauge with '/ or 1/2 Ib.
increments.
♦ DO NOT approach endcaps or manways while
tanks are under pressure. This could result in
personal injury.
♦ DO NOT lift or hoist a tank under pressure. This
could result in personal injury.
DO NOT
♦ Use a vacuum gauge in lieu of a pressure gauge.
TESTING DOUBLE-WALL TANKS WITH DRY
ANNULARSPACE
This section is for tanks which do not have monitoring tracer
fluid installed. If tank arrives at site with monitoring fluid
installed, use instructions for Double -Wall Tanks with Annular
Space Filled on page 5.
CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
5
