established for each exclusion zone. It may be part of the exclusion zone, outside
of the zone, or both. Equipment, such as sampling devices, that must be
decontaminated before being reused in an exclusion zone, may be decontaminated
in the exclusion zone. Equipment, such as a hand auger, will be decontaminated
in a relatively uncontaminated area in a contaminated reduction zone before
leaving the controlled area. Protective equipment worn in exclusion zones must
also be worn in equipment decontamination areas.
One or more areas shall be designated for decontamination of personnel because
personnel decontamination will be required before rest breaks, lunch, leaving the
site at the end of the work shift and entering the Support Zone to coordinate
activities with other personnel.
Support Zone: A support zone is a relatively clean area where support equipment
and facilities are located. The support zone is best if stationed upwind of the
exclusion zone or disturbance area(s).
7.3 Levels of Protection
The level of protection while performing tasks at the site will be dependent upon
known and/or suspected contaminants to be encountered during the progress of the
works. The level of protection, and any upgrading or downgrading, will be
determined by the SHSC. Generally, tasks of underground fuel piping removals
can be accomplished at a D level of protection. The following lists personal
protective clothing and equipment for personnel while working at level D.
• Coveralls (optional)
• work gloves for equipment operators
• Latex gloves for sampling personnel
• Boots, leather or chemical -resistant, steel toe and shank
• Safety glasses (available for use)
• Hard hat
• Air purifying respirators (available for use)
• Hearing protection (available for use)
The following lists personal protective clothing and equipment for field personnel
while working at an upgraded level C.
• Air -purifying, cartridge -equipped respirator (OSHA/NIOSH approved) with
organic chemical cartridges.
• Disposable Tyvek coveralls
• Gloves (outer), chemical resistant
• Gloves (inner) chemical resistant
• Safety glasses (available for use)
• Boots, leather or chemical -resistant, steel toe and shank
