• Hearing protection (available for use)
• Booties (outer), chemical resistant, disposable (optional)
• Hard hat / ( face shield - optional)
7.4 Monitoring Requirements
Levels of organic vapors in the breathing zone of field personnel will be identified
while they are performing their tasks at the site by utilizing a calibrated, direct
reading, Photoionization Detector (PID), organic vapor analyzer (OVA), or
equivalent instrumentation.
Readings of these instruments will be utilized to define the level of protection field
personnel will be required to work under. With PID instrument readings in the
breathing zone of personnel of up to 50 parts per million (ppm), personnel may work
with level D personal protective clothing and equipment. If the PID readings in the
breathing zone of personnel are consistently between 50 and 250 ppm, site
activities will continue but with the protection upgraded to level C. The works will
be stopped, and personnel will be moved upwind of the exclusion zone, if PID
readings are greater than 250 ppm, while the SHSC/HSM assess the situation.
7.5 Decontamination Requirements
Personnel: All personnel leaving the active work area will be required to
decontaminate personal protective clothing in the decontamination zone prior to
leaving the site for breaks, lunch or end of work shift. Wash hands and face.
Take a shower and wash hair as soon as possible after leaving the site.
Heavy Equipment: All contaminated equipment utilized by a contractor will be
decontaminated by the contractor before it is used at another locale or before the
equipment leaves the site. Any contaminated material, other than soil samples will
be placed in metal drums and/or placed on plastic sheeting and covered and stored
on site according to Federal, State and local storage regulations, until the material
is analyzed for future disposal.
7.6 Safety Equipment
While the underground fuel piping removal activities are in progress, BPC will
provide a first-aid kit, eyewash kit, fire extinguisher and sorbent material for
personnel at the site.
