). H. KLEINFELDER & ASSbCIATES
File : PW86-1017
May 15 , 1986
Page 2
SCOPE OF WORK
I. Soil Boring & Samoling
A single boring will be drilled at each end of the tank
at a 450 angle to a depth of 17 feet 'using hollow-stem auger
equipment . Because the tank is located under the building
one of the borings will be drilled from within the building
using a portable drilling device. Adequate clearance will
be necessary for a forklift to enter and maneuver within the
building to situate the drill rig. We anticipate utilizing
a truck-mounted auger rig for the boring to begin outside
the building. One sample will be collected from the
termination of each boring. The samples will be placed in
ice-cooled chests and handled under strict chain-of-custody
procedures to ensure sample integrity. All field work
performed will be under the supervision of a staff level J.
H. Kleinfelder geologist.
II . Laboratory Analysis
It would not be economical or necessary to analyze for
all the pesticides which may have been discharged to the
rinsewater holding tank. We evaluated the list of
pesticides provided to us and consulted with our chemists
and contract laboratory and selected three chemical groups
for the analytical program. Based on availability of
analytical reference standards, chemical mobility and cost
of analyses, we recommend organophospate and carbamate
Desticide scans and analyses for volatile aromatic
hydrocarbons. The volatile aromatic hydrocarbon scan is
included to detect the carriers normally used in many
pesticide formulations. These three analytical scans should
indicate whether leakage from the holding tank has occurred.
We did consider use of the priority pollutants
Desticide scan but decided against using this type of
analysis. This analysis generally screens for
organochlorine pesticides and would not detect any of the
listed compounds.
III . Report of Findinas
A summary report will be prepared with results of our
field and laboratory investigations to include
recommendations for further investigation if deemed
necessary.
