k'9 KLEINFELDER
Observations and Soil Sampling
Banks & Company of Fresno, California was present on site with a backhoe to remove the UST
from the site on November 7, 2001. Also present was Ms. Stacey Pinola, Hazardous Material
Coordinator for Delta College, Mr Kent Miller, Deputy Fire Marshal, and Kasey Foley of San
Joaquin County San Joaquin County Public Health Services Department Environmental Health
Division (PHS/EHD).
At the time Kleinfelder arrived on site the UST was located in an east by west oriented
excavation located south of the Holt Building of Delta College (Plate 1). The excavation was
rectangular measuring approximately 7 feet x 9 feet x 6 feet deep. The tank was mostly
uncovered and still in the excavation. The soil within the excavation was a brown clay, some
sand backfill was noted beneath the tank. The UST was constructed of metal and had an
approximate capacity of 575 gallons. The bottom of the tank was measured at about 6 feet below
ground surface(bgs). The type of fuel previously used in the tank was unknown. Excavated soil
had been placed on visqueen on an asphaltic parking lot, located south of the excavation. A slight
petroleum like odor was noted from the excavated soil, but no soil discoloration was noted from
soil in the excavation or from the excavated soil.
Banks & Company personnel lifted the tank from the excavation using a backhoe. The exterior
of the tank was scraped using a shovel. No holes were observed. Mr. Al Rivas of Banks &
Company commented that the fill end of the tank was located at the west-end of the tank. After
removal of the tank, a soil sample was collected from within the excavation at a depth of
approximately 8 feet (2 feet below the fill end of the former UST) under the direction of Ms.
Foley of PHS/EHD. The additional soil from depths 6 to 8 feet bgs was excavated using a
backhoe.
The single soil sample collected from within the excavation was collected by slide hammering a
2-inch diameter by 6-inch long stainless steel tube into the soil. No water was noted in the
bottom of the excavation
Two discrete soil samples were also collected from about 50 yards of soil excavated from the
UST location. The stockpile soil samples were collected at depths of 1 %2 to 2 feet below the
surface or sides of the stockpile. The soil samples were collected by pushing a pre-cleaned tube
into the soil by hand.
Sample Collection and Handling
The stainless steel sampler and sample tubes were cleaned prior to use with a Liquinox®
(laboratory-grade detergent) wash followed by a potable water and distilled water rinse. The
stainless steel tubes used for collecting the samples were then sealed following collection of the
sample with Teflon° sheeting and tight-fitting plastic end caps. After collection, the soil
samples were labeled, logged on a chain-of-custody form, and immediately stored in an iced
cooler pending transportation to the analytical laboratory.
20-0232-01/2011 R 1514 Page 2 of 6
0 2001,Kleinfelder, Inc.
