Respiratory exposure limits for anticipated volatile compounds are tabulated
below.
COMPOUND IDLH PEL STEL
Benzene a 1 5
Ethylbenzene 2000 100 125
Toluene 2000 100 500
Xylene 1000 100 150
Notes:
1. Units are parts-per-million(ppm) in air.
a Carcinogen(NIOSH, June 1990). Original NIOSH IDLH = 3000
During the tank removal project, on-site respirators will consist of half-face type
fitted with organic vapor cartridges. Respirators will be worn if air monitoring
equipment, photoionzation detector(FID) or equivalent, indicates total organic
vapors of 20 ppm or greater within the primary work zone breathing space for
more than 10 minutes. If the total organic vapors are consistently greater than 50
ppm, full-face respirators will be worn and consideration will be given to potential
engineering controls and/or upgrading personal protection.
EXPLOSION HAZARDS
During PID air monitoring, ten percent of the Lower Explosive Limit(LEL) for
ethylebenzene will be considered the project safety standard. The LEL for
ethylbenzene has been set by the National Institute for Occupational Safety
(NIOSH) at 1.0 percent in air. Ten percent of 1.0 percent is equivalent to 1000
ppm. Monitoring will be performed on vapors emanating from the excavation.
All equipment will be shut-down while further safety alternatives are evaluated if
the LEL meter indicates explosion potential andlor if air monitoring equipment
readings indicate near 1000 ppm levels. Dry chemical fire extinguishers will be
on-hand at all times during tank removal activities.
FORK ZONES AND SECURITY MEASURES
The majority of the work will be performed at the tank pit areas with additional work
being performed at the piping trenches from the tank pit to the fuel dispensing islands.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
In extreme emergencies which require immediate aid, dial 911. The nearest emergency
inedical facility for major injury is Dameron Hospital located at 525 Acacia Street in
Stockton (refer to attached map; phone number 944-5550.
MIk ■AIV ff
ON ■ .&
MAN
O"M MWF W ANffRWW=1V
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES, INC.
