VI. HAZARDOUS WASTE ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Foam production of varying consistencies is performed in the southwest
corner of the plant on one production line. The different products are
manufactured by varying the chemical combinations of isocyanate (-NCO),
polyol (-OH), and water. The more water used in the foam formula, the
greater the urea formation and the more rigid the foam. Blowing agents, like
CFC-11 or methylene chloride, are used to further reduce foam density.
No hazardous waste is generated in the manufacturing process, however,
during the cleanup process, methylene chloride is used to clean the mixing
manifold after rigid foam production (air is used to clean the manifold after
foam production of less dense products due to a shorter chemical reaction
or set-up time). In 1992 .225 tons of methylene chloride was manifested for
disposal. The use of air instead of methylene chloride to clean the manifold
and nozzles has reduced the amount of hazardous waste generated to less
than 25 tons per year. Methylene chloride is a listed R.C.R.A. waste identified
as U080 and F002. The waste is transported by Oil and Solvent Process
Company, 1704 W. 1st St., Azusa, CA 91702.
Latex paint waste is transported by Safety Kleen Corporation, 1722 Cooper
Creek Road, Denton, Texas, 76201. Paint is used in general facility
maintenance. In 1992, 2.47 tons of latex was manifested for disposal.
A glue waste is generated via production and cleanup. This waste contains
1,1,1,-Trichloroethane. This waste stream is transported by Romic Chemical
Corporation, 2081 Bay Road, East Palo Alto, CA 94303. In 1992, 1.6 tons of
glue/solvent waste was manifested for disposal.
Waste oil and hydraulic fluid is generated from vehicle and equipment
maintenance. The waste oil and hydraulic fluid is transported by PRC
Patterson, Incorporated, 13331 N. Highway 33, Patterson, CA 95363. In 1992,
1.68 tons of waste oil, and 0.3 tons of hydraulic fluid was manifested for
disposal.
Safety Kleen solvent wash stations are located in the two maintenance areas
for parts cleaning. A total of 0.46 tons of solvent waste was manifested for
disposal in 1992.
Contaminated absorbent and rags are generated via the cleaning of oil and
grease spills at this facility. Safety Kleen transported and disposed of 0.40
tons of this waste in 1992.
3
