N-Methyl pyrildinone is being phased out of production, and is awaiting
waste characterization. This chemical was used in the cold tank to remove
solidified foam. High pressure washing is now used in its place. The two 55-
gallon drums will be disposed of as soon as characterization is complete.
The truck maintenance shop is located in the northeast area of the facility. An
oil/water separator with a 2,000 gallon aboveground storage tank is not
being used due to disposal restrictions. Waste oil is accumulated in drums in
the shop. Total tonnage for 1992 was 6.675 tons.
VII: VIOLATIONS:
Violations noted during the May 5, 1992 inspection are as follows:
1. Containers used for collection of contaminated absorbent and rags were
not labeled.
2. Three waste oil drums located in the repair shop did not have current
accumulation start dates.
3. The contingency plan did not describe arrangements agreed to by the
local police departments, fire departments, hospitals, contractors, and
State and local emergency response teams to coordinate emergency
services.
4. Two drums of N-Methyl pyrildinone stored in the hazardous waste
storage are being stored in excess of 90 days, however,as stated
previously, this waste stream is currently being characterized. Violation
determination is pending.
5. One 55 gallon drum of glue/solvent hazardous waste was unlabeled.
VIII OBSERVATIONS:
Eric Trevena and I arrived on site at approximately 9:30 a.m. Scott
Granneman, the Environmental Coordinator, was in a meeting until 10:00 so
we left the site and returned at 10:00 a.m. Upon our return, we informed Mr.
Granneman that we would like to perform a routine hazardous waste
generator and an underground fuel storage tank (UST) inspection. Mr.
Granneman gave his consent for the inspection, provided us with safety
glasses and visitor badges, then led us outside to first inspect the UST. (The
4
