0
Specification No . : RGS0024-87
Part II - SPECIFIC CONDITIONS
Section 10 - Earthwork
10 . 6 . 4 Backfill and Fill :
11 . 6 . 4. 1 General : Place acceptable soil material in layers to
required subgrade elevations .
10 . 6 . 4. 2 Backfill excavations as promptly as work permits , but
not until completion of the following :
Acceptance of construction below finished grade .
Inspection , testing , approval and recording locations
of underground utilities .
Removal of concrete framework.
Removal of trash and debris .
10 . 6 . 4 . 3 Ground Surface Preparation : Remove vegetation ,
debris , unsatisfactory soil materials , obstructions ,
and deleterious materials from ground surface prior to
placement of fills . Plow , strip , or break-up sloped
surfaces steeper than 1 vertical to 4 horizontal so
that fill material will bond with existing surface .
When existing ground surface has a density less than
that specified under "Compaction" for particular area
classification , break up ground surface , pulverize ,
moisture- condition to optimum moisture content , and
compact to required depth and percentage of maximum
density.
10 . 6 . 4 . 4 Placement and Compaction : Place backfill and fill
materials in layers not more than 8 " in loose depth
for material compacted by heavy compaction equipment ,
and not more than 4 " in loose depth for material
compacted by hand - operated tampers . Before
compaction, moisture or aerate each layer as necessary
to provide optimum moisture content . Compact each
layer to required percentage of maximum dry density or
relative dry density for each area classification .
Place backfill and fill materials evenly adjacent to
structures , to required elevations . Take care to
prevent wedging action or backfill against structures
by carrying material uniformly around structure to
approximately safe elevation in each lift .
X-6
