' 0
BACKGROUND
The following background description is based on information provided to Geocon by Caltrans and
' preliminary research performed during an initial site visit
The Site contains several monitoring wells, one of which, MW-14 (located medially between the
' equipment building and the warehouse), was lowered approximately 0 9 meter (3 feet) to protect it
during the construction of the new maintenance building The area where the well was located was
' backfilled and paved with asphalt concrete The groundwater beneath the Site is impacted with
petroleum hydrocarbons released from former gasoline and diesel underground storage tanks The
monitoring wells are currently included in a quarterly monitoring program Maximum TPHg,
TPHd, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and benzene concentrations of 231,000, 6,100, 96 and
28,000 micrograms per liter (µg11), respectively, have been reported for water samples collected
' from the wells The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (CVRWQCB) has
directed Caltrans to perform vertical characterization of groundwater contamination
LThe primary contaminants of concern at the Site include total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPHg), total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total
' xylenes (BTEX), and methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE)
1
1
Project No 58475-06-02 -2- December 26,2001
