Soil
samples will be collected at pipe joints or at areas of observed staining. Samples will be
analyzed for analytical parameters associated with each tank noted above
7.0 EXCAVATION OF IMPACTED SOIL
This section of the work plan describes the methods and procedures for excavation of the
petroleum impacted soil previously identified in section 3 of this work plan
7.1 EXCAVATION N OPTIONS
Two methods of excavation are available for removal of the soil One method of excavation
utilizes temporary steel shoring to keep the sidewalls of the excavation from collapsing This
method allows for excavation of a smaller volume of soil because the sidewalls are kept vertical
and do not need sloping. However, shoring an excavation to a depth of approximately 40 ft
bgs is very expensive and does not allow for increasing the size of the excavation beyond the
shonng Also, the shored walls of an excavation do not allow for sidewall soil sampling.
The second method of excavation requires that the sidewalls of the excavation be sloped back,
at some angle, from the bottom of the excavation Sloping the sidewalls will increase the size
iof the excavation and the quantity of soil excavated. The slope of the sidewall is dependent
upon the soil type Sandy soil generally requires a sidewall slope of 1 1, however, soil with
higher clay content allows for steeper sloping of the sidewall such as 1.2 The soil at this site
ihas a large component of silt and clay Site conditions will dictate the appropriate sidewall
L\PR0JECTWANJ6QU.0D1 ACT 13 15 May 1995
