Inhalation exposure to diesel fuel can be
controlled through supplied air respirators,however,ventilation in the open`normally requires no
respiratory protection. The use of skin protection,(i.e.chemically-protective gloves) is required when
handling petroleum-contaminated materials. .
3.3.2 Physical Hazards
Physical hazards associated with this project include: vehicular traffic; drilling; slipping,tripping, and/or
falling; heavy equipment;noise; underground and overhead utilities;;and heat stress.
Vehicular Traffic
The site investigation is being conducted within the vicinity of an existing maintenance yard. Traffic
control may be required to protect the field staff and supervisory personnel: Personnel in each crew shall be
4 designated with the responsibility of monitoring maintenance vehicle traffic while work is in progress at the
site. Personnel may be required to wear orange reflective vests when working on or adjacent to roadways.
Slipping, Tripping, and Falling
All on-site personnel are to be aware of hazards from uneven terrainl Personnel must maintain clear footing
and identify obstructions,holes, and other tripping hazards at the job'site. If work occurs near a fall hazard,
l including excavations made for sampling purposes,the edge will be clearly marked with caution tape, and
1 all on-site personnel will be made aware of the hazard. i
Heavy Equipment
Drill rigs and other heavy equipment present a number of physical hazards to personnel working near them.
Cables may break under stress; rocks or metal parts may become projectiles during operation of equipment;
drums,augers,or other equipment may fall on unprotected appendages; clothing or body parts may become
tangled in moving parts of machinery; and steam cleaning equipment can cause severe bums. Personnel
working near equipment should know how to turn the equipment off.in the event of an emergency. All
personnel onsite are required to wear hard hats and steel-toed boots.!l Safety glasses are required when
I}
working near projectile hazards or splash or,spray hazards(steam cleaning drill rigs). Awareness of the
.t
potential hazards associated with heavy equipment will reduce the likelihood of accidents.
6
I j.
