w
1
1
is Noise
For any noise producing activities present on site, such as excavation and drilling operations,the SO shall
advise all personnel about those site activities for which there is the'potential for exposure to high noise
levels. Hearing protection such as ear plugs or ear muffs shall be available;iat the site for use by personnel
I. who must work in high noise areas..This protection shall be mandatory for,all personnel who are exposed
to levels in excess of 90 decibels,A-weighted, during site activities.11The SO shall designate appropriate
+ hearing protection,based on noise levels and length of exposure.
Underground Utilities
Numerous serious accidents and extensive property damage occur when power excavating equipment
encounters unexpected underground utility lines. Such utilities include gas',lines, electrical lines, sewers,
and telephone lines. The probability of accidentally encountering these lines is minimized if the lines are
marked by a line location service. Appropriate safety controls will be implemented to avoid disturbing
I
{ underground utilities. TtEMi will contact the line location service(e.g.,Underground Service Alert at 800-
422-4133)prior to any subsurface investigations.
Overhead Utilities
Masts on drill rigs or other construction equipment often reach heights of 30 feet or more and can easily
come in contact with overhead utility lines. The potential for contact with overhead utility lines will be
I
minimized by keeping the mast at least twenty feet away from the lines or by using special drill rigs with
;i
ll low overhead clearances.
1 i
Heat Stress i}
I Because heat stress is one of the most common and potentially serious illnesses that hazardous operations
workers encounter, regular monitoring and other preventative measures are`vital. The potential exists for
heat rash,.heat cramps,heat exhaustion,and heat stroke. The action level for heat stress monitoring is any
temperature greater than 75°F. Whenever the action level for heat stress has been reached,the SO will alert
f all site workers to watch for the symptoms of heat stress,and increase theirrconsumption of water and
electrolyte-containing beverages. }
7
