The primary objective will be accomplished
' through soil sampling and testing of both the treated soil base and the underlying native soils. In addition,
the groundwater chemistry will be analyzed to determine if naturally occurring groundwater constituents
may have contributed to the cause of the heave.
The objectives listed above will be achieved by the following methods:
• Collect continuous soil samples from at least twelve(12) locations beneath the roadways within
several target subdivisions exhibiting significant pavement heave. These soils will be tested for
geotechnical properties to determine expansion potential that could lead to ground heave.
• Shallow groundwater samples will be retrieved from four(4) locations using direct push
techniques(HydroPunch or equivalent)to identify the depth to groundwater and retrieve water
samples for elemental chemistry analysis.
• All sampling locations will be backfilled with bentonite grout to the base of the treated soil
surface, with pea gravel to the base of the pavement, then patched with asphalt to the pavement
surface. All backfill activities will be performed in accordance with applicable regulations.None
of the borings will be left standing open overnight.
t2.0 GEOTECBMCAL SAMPLING PLAN
This section presents the procedures that will be used for drilling and soil sampling, grab groundwater
sampling, and abandonment of temporary borings. Since this consists solely of a geotechnical
investigation, investigation-derived wastes will be handled and disposed in accordance with normal
construction practices.
2.1 Drilling Equipment and Methods
'. Geophysical clearance for utilities or other obstructions will be completed prior to any drilling activities.
All drilling locations have been observed in the field and selected to minimize the chance of intersecting
buried utilties. All proposed boring locations have been spray painted on the pavement in advance of any
subsurface activity. Initial utility clearances have been performed through Underground Services Alert
(USA)for all potential drilling and sampling interferences. If field observations create suspicion that
there may be any unidentified utilities or other anomalies in the proposed drilling location, the boreholes
will be relocated to the nearest suitable alternative area.
It is anticipated that there will be four shallow aratjgroundwater sam 1' and u
' additional soil borings. All borings will be installed using true -mounted drilling equipment. The
ormgs will be continuously sampled for lithologic information and soil sampling for testing. The ct-
push method will drill by hydraulically advancing a stainless-steel core barrel to the depth desired. The
core barrel encases a clear acetate or solid brass liner that is extracted to log soils. In either case, soils
will be lithologically logged using ASTM Method D 2488-90.
1 2
