PHS/EHD has prepared the following comments for your
consideration and response.
The report included the results of the August 14 and 15, 1997 investigation of the former
gasoline and diesel tanks and the approximately 220 feet of diesel product piping which
evidenced an unauthorized release at the time of the December 1990 removal. A total of 10
soil borings were advanced using a hydraulically driven push point method. Four borings
were advanced in the vicinity of the former gasoline tank, four boring were advanced in the
vicinity of a diesel product piping release and two were advanced in the vicinity of the former
diesel tank.
The results from the samples collected in the vicinity of the product piping release and the
former diesel tanks indicated that closure of the diesel tank site may be warranted. Please
submit an estimate of the remaining soil and groundwater contamination in these areas.
PHS/EHD will evaluate the tank closure once the additional information is received.
The results from the soil and groundwater samples collected in the vicinity of the former
gasoline underground storage tank indicated that additional information would be required.
. The soil contamination evidenced in the samples collected from soil boring,SB-1,did not
appear significant with the highest concentration detected at 10 feet below ground surface
(bgs) of 59 ppb xylene. However, the groundwater contamination detected at 15 feet bgs of
30,600 ppb TPH-gasoline was significant.
Please note that Table 2 erroneously noted the benzene concentration for the grab
groundwater sample collected from SB-1 as 20 ppb when the Iaboratory report indicated that
the concentration detected was <20 ppb. Please prepare a revised table.
The soil results from SB-1 in light of the grab groundwater results and the tank removal
results, suggest the possibility that SB-1 may not have been located through the soil which
contributed to the groundwater contamination which was evidenced.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
