0 0
3.0 SITE HAZARD ASSESSMENT
Based on the previous Site investigations, the following potential hazards have been identified at
the Site: 1) physical hazards, and 2) chemical hazards.
3.1 Physical Hazards
Physical hazards at this Site may include activities associated with drilling and sampling:
disturbance of utilities, tripping, falling or slipping during Site activities, injury from moving
equipment on rigs, and noise.
3.1.1 Drilling/Augering Hazards
Electrical cables, gas lines, water lines, and unknown objects may be located underground at the
Site. ENV America will notify Underground Service Alert(sometimes referred to as"Dig Alert" or
"USA") of the intent of field investigation at least 48 hours prior to the start of field operations.
The following drilling/augering standard operating procedures will be implemented to prevent the
drilling hazards:
• A hard hat and eye protection will be required for protection from potential head
and eye injury;
• Visitors will not be allowed to enter the work zone unless they have attended a
project safety briefing and have had appropriate health and safety training;
• Borings will be secured (i.e., covered)when drilling and sampling activities are not
actually taking place;
• No boring will be left unattended; and,
• The drill rig will not be moved until the boom has been completely lowered.
The work zone for this Site shall consist of the area within 20 feet of an open borehole or the drill
rig. The work zone for hand augering will consist of the immediate area where such activity is
occurring. No equipment other than those needed for the specific activity will be placed in this
area.
3.1.2 Trenching Hazards
Exploratory trenches are not anticipated for this project. In the unlikely event trenching is
conducted, the precautions and procedures presented in this section will be adhered to.
Excavations may pose physical hazards to Site Personnel. Because of the potential hazards
associated with trenches (such as sidewall instability and toxic or combustible gas
accumulation). Site Personnel will not enter trench excavations that are 4 feet or more in depth.
If Site Personnel need to enter such trenches or excavations, requirements in 29 CFR 1926,
ENV.:; 4 February 2005
A M E R I C A PAPG&E\PGE-05-01 Stockton MW26R Investigation\MW26 Work Plan\H&SIH&S Plan-2005.doc
