The sparging will perform two necessary duties The first is to strip the hydrocarbon from the
water and soil and the second is to oxygenate the water to promote biodegradation Since all of
the chemicals to gasoline have Henery's constants above 10"5 Atm-M3- mole"' they will be stripped
from the water and soil as they have been with the vapor extraction system The added oxygen to
the water will allow more oxygen for the microorganisms to metabolize the hydrocarbons in the
water and soil
The sparging system will have to be monitored to assure it is operating properly Pnor to starting
the sparging the depth to water in wells BM-1, BM-3, BM-4, BM-5, BM-6, BM-7 and BM-6 will be
measured After two days of operation the depth to water will again be checked in these wells
The reason for checking is to define the limits of the sparging and to observe if the mounding from
the sparging in not too great Before starting the vapor recovery from the extraction wells they will
be checked for the amount of hydrocarbons in the wells and again two days later this will be
checked Future testing will depend on the ongmal tests
If the system operates as designed the sparging will continue until it is not removing any more
hydrocarbons If it is not operating as designed the system will be shut down and adjustments will
be made
ADDITIONAL MONITORING WELLS
The EHD letter requests two additional monitonng wells Well BM-12 will be located along the
western property line of this property and will check the incoming groundwater contamination from
sites west of this property Well BM-9 records incoming contamination from westerly sites but this
well will define the extent of the contamination Well BM-13 will monitor contamination directly
down gradient of source area (old tanks) Well BM-11 may monitor this, however there is a
contaminated site to the southeast of this property and some or all of the contamination in this well
may come from that site In Apni 1996 we dniled two hydropunch CPT bonngs in the parking lot of
Pep Boys, the findings are shown in the Quarterly and Activity Report of June 10, 1996 We
planned to drill three bonngs, however, the ng encountered refusal before it reach the water table
This well (BM-13)will be drilled at approximately the same spot
The EHD has also requested we drill one bonng to define the vertical limits of the contamination
Through discussion, we have requested this bonng be converted to a vapor extraction well labeled
VW-6 The well position and design is shown in Figures 4 and 5
Wells BM-12 and 13 will be do#led to a depth of 60 feet, which is 10 feet below the lowest depth to
water taken since January 1990 Vapor extraction well VW-6 will be dulled to a depth of 45 feet
Dunng the drilling soil sampled will be taken every 5 feet, checked with an OVA Meter and
selected sampled will be sent to Sherwood Labs, a certified California Analytical Laboratory, for
analyses of the TPH and BTEX chemicals The borings will be logged geologically by a
Registered Geologist
The wells will be constructed using 2 inch PVC slotted casing from 60 feet to 30 feet in BM-12 &13
and from 45 feet to 15 feet in VW-6 Blank casing will placed from the end of the slotted casing to
the surface Number 3 sand will be placed opposite the slotted casing and about 2 feet above the
casing A bentonite seal made of hydrated chips will be placed directly above the sand and the
remainder of the well annulus will be filled with hydrated cement Each well will be capped with a
steel traffic box
• The dell cuttings will be placed in steel drums and left on site until the laboratory analyses are
finished
