' • • k4 KLEI NFELDER
' resampling. The SJCEHD (Linda Turkette) was present during both the initial sampling and the
resampling. Following resampling and disposal of soil from the excavated area, the SJCEHD
closed the case on the spill.
' On August 29 and 30, 1995, Kleinfelder drilled six borings around and through the tank area.
Soil samples were collected at the ground surface and at 5 foot intervals from the six borings.
' Concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel were reported in angled boring
AB-3 at depths of 5 (500 mg/kg) and 10 feet (3,900 mg/kg). TPH concentrations were also
' reported in VB-2 at 22 mg/kg at a depth of 25 feet. The petroleum hydrocarbons detected in
boring AB-3 appear to be diesel associated with operation of the former aboveground storage
tanks (AGST). Since TPH concentrations were not detected in soil samples collected from VB-2
above 25 feet, the concentrations reported may be due to migration of TPH in groundwater from
a nearby source or vadose zone transport. Surface samples collected adjacent to each boring also
were impacted with TPH concentrations ranging from 22 to 3,400 mg/kg. Based on the TPH
concentrations reported in samples collected from AB-3, Kleinfelder recommends that the soil in
this area be excavated and remediated, or disposed of at an appropriate waste disposal facility.
Surface soil which has been impacted with TPH should also be excavated and disposed of along
' with soil in the vicinity of AB-3. Results of this assessment are presented Meinfelder's Soil
Assessment report dated October 19, 1995.
In a letter dated June 5, 1996, Mr. Joel Weiss of the CRWQCB agreed with the recommendations
' for soil excavation and requested the submittal of soil remediation work plan by June 28, 1996.
This work plan presents a scope of work to excavate and dispose of diesel impacted soil as
requested by the CRWQCB.
23-482276-B00/CR96S070 Page 3 of 8 June 26, 1996
Copyright 1996 Kleinfelder,Inc.
