0 <br />11 <br />I3542a/BAV102 2 <br />1.2.2 Previous investi&ations <br />Two previous investigations were performed at the Tracy site, both centering <br />on an underground gasoline tank formerly located in the northwest corner of <br />the property. <br />In November 1986, during an underground tank investigation, PG&E found <br />gasoline floating on standing water in two soil borings drilled within 5 <br />feet of the underground gasoline tank then located in the northwest corner <br />of the Tracy site. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and lead were <br />detected in some of the soil and water samples collected from these borings. <br />Gas plant residues were not noted in subsurface soils in this investigation. <br />In December 1987, PG&E performed additional field work around the <br />underground gasoline tank (which had by then been removed and disposed of <br />according to state regulations), to quantify the vertical and horizontal <br />distribution of gasoline hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater surrounding <br />the former tank location. As a part of this investigation, six monitoring <br />wells (see Figure 2) were constructed within 80 feet of the former tank <br />location. During the drilling process, odorous, black material suspected of <br />being gas plant residues was encountered within 5 feet of the ground surface <br />in the borings for observation wells OW -1 and OW -2. <br />0 <br />11 <br />I3542a/BAV102 2 <br />
