3G;
YE
project No. 90161.e
7 June 1990
Moderately expansive soils should be compacted to at least 870
not more than 92% relative compaction an
relative compaction but
d
at a moisture content at least 3% over optimum. Degree of
compaction is the ratio of the dry density of the constructed
w fill to the maximum determined by the ASTM Test Procedure D1557-
78.
5.13 Compaction shall be by sheepsfoot rollers or other types of
acceptable compacting rollers. Rollers shall be of such design
that they will be able to compact the fill to the specified
density. Rolling shall be accomplished while the fill material
ed moisture content range. Rolling of each
is within the specifi
layer shall be continuous over the entire area and the roller
shall make sufficient trips to ensure that the required density
y has been achieved. No ponding
jetting shall be permitted.
5.14 Field density tests shall be performed at }east every 2
feet of compacted fill height by the Geotechnical Engineer in
Accordance with ASTM Test Procedure D1556-82 or ASTM Test
Procedure D2922-81. When sheepsfoot rollers are used for
compaction, the density tests shall be taken in the compacted
material below the surface disturbed by the roller. When these
tests indicate that the density of any layer of fill or portion
thereof is below the required compaction, it shall b; reworked
until than required compaction has been achieved.
5.15 No shall be placed or compacted either during periods
" of rain or on ground which is not drained of all free water.
26
