May 13, 1998
Mr. Harlin Knoll
Page 2
Subsequent to the April 30 meeting, the following has been accomplished:
1. The additional soil removal and testing was completed, and results forwarded to you.
2. Oxygen releasing compounds were placed in both excavations and both holes were filled.
3. The monitoring wells were sampled and results forwarded to you. Both locations are within the
plume and near the downgradient, edge of it,and should be satisfactory for the stated purpose.
4. Further project contacts can be made with me at Pittsburgh,PA (Telephone 412-237-3807)or
with Dave Bauer at our Stockton factory(Telephone 209-932-5752).
Remaining work is limited to repaving both excavations, which will be done as soon as weather permits,
followed by the ground water sampling program as described above. ERM is preparing a closure report
which should be in your hands within a few days.
In accord with our discussions of April 30,Heinz U.S.A,requests that San Joaquin County Public Health
Services provide a"No Further Action"letter, subject to completion of ground water monitoring to the
agency's satisfaction, and subject to investigation and correction of any additional problems which may be
indicated by monitoring results. It is requested that the letter be completed as quickly as possible,as it is a
key requirement in the completion of the property transfer to the Cranbrook Group.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this request. Your continuing assistance to ERM and Heinz in
directing and expediting this project is much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Donald G.Kirk
Environmental Consultant
DGKIpn
cc: Dave Bauer-Stockton Factory -
Matt Brandy-ERM
