r
hm.
OF
o Drilling of four soil borir..gs for the purpose of obtaining soil samples to be analyzed
in the field via gas chromatography, and further testing by Bio National Corporation.
o Conversion of tour soil borings to ground waxer observation wells for the purpose of
obtaining water samples for analysis at Fireman's Fund Laboratories of Fetaluma,
J,4 California.
E Soil borings will be drilled tv enab=e installation of observation wells. Truck mounted hollow-
stem auger drilling equipment will beused.
j Each boring will be advanced to approximately ter, feet below the water table or into a clay
or other material below the water table, suspected to be of lower permeabVity, whichever is less
deep. Undisturbed soil samples will be obtained using lite Dames & Moore Type-U !ampler
? r driven by a 140 pound hammer falling 30 inches. Samples will be collected from the borings at
minimum intervals of five feet. The clean sampler wil.be driven into the soil beneath the open
borehole. The soil samples retained in the 3-inch stainless steel tube:,will be removed from the
bI
sampler and their ends sealed with teflon membranes and plastic end caps. Eacn sainpiz-Cjected
for chemical an-:ysis will be securely sealed, labeled and stored in ice cooled wwtains.
. y
To prohibit cross-contamination of successive samples, the sampling equipment will be
disassembled between sampling attempts and washed with a tri-sodium phosphate (TSP)soap
solution. The samplers will.hen be reassembled with clean 3-ir:cf stainless steel tubes and then
' used for subsequent sampling. All augers and sampling equipment will be thoroughly steam-
clsaned between borings to prevent cross-con:amination.
Four ground water wells will be installed at the facility. The wells will be installed for water
level monitoring and ground water sampling pLrposes.
Four ground water samples, one quality control duplicate field blank, a t.tvzl blank and a
r.iasat3 sample will be collected for chemical analysis for each round of ground water sampling.
Samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH)and benzene.toluene, xylene,
and ethylbenzene by EPA Method 8015 Modified and Method 602.
V. HAZARD ANALYSIS
Based!ie the site background and planned actiAties, the following types of hazards exist
Pinch points and rotating machinery associated with truck mounted drill rigs;
Skin contact with potentially contaminated soil and wNtei-u:firing sampling;
Inhalation of organic vapors during soil and water sampling; and
' Inhalation and ingestion of soil particle: potentially contaminated with benzene,
toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene.
Sampling in this area could result in the release of contaminated particles and organic vapors.
A minimum level of persos.nel prorection must be recommended that will prevent skin contact
with the soil and prevent re3pirato-y inhalation of soil particles or vapors. Specifics regavding
necessary protective measures are addressed in the next section. Also, the attached Material
Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) list impor.ant properties of various contaminants that may possibly
be encountered.
2
